Do you mean a water butt?

I tried to set one up only to find there are no suitably placed downpipes ion my house!

I am a potter and always needs rain water to mix suitable clay bodies and what I dis was to buy an ordinary black bin wiht a lid that stands next to my studio, it catches all the rain and is full most of the time. The lid keeps plant materials out as it can rot and cause a stink, but remember to lift when it rains.

There's an interesting article in The Times which touches on this.

I'm sure you've already checked out the info at the Centre for alternative energy .

I know, it just seems so wrong to be charging tax on this kind of thing when so many other countries are giving grants to help people be more eco-friendly. They wouldn't even necessarily have to give grants, if you could get a low interest loan then lots of these things would be much more affordable as they usually take about a decade or so to break even.

It is unfair - we get penalised for trying to help

We do rainwater harvesting for all usages - not just flushing the loo etc, but also the main house water. This means we have a very complicated (and expensive) filtration system. In the beginning we tried to do just the loos without so much filtration but we found that we were getting problems with the toilets and pipes getting damaged, so that's something to watch out for.

Thanks for that - I will look at it

I know I will need filtration for just toilets but I'm not sure at what level (yet )
