and on the subject of tesco bags - you know they claim their bags break down really quickly - well they do. Christmas 2004 I put our nativity set in a plastic bag (tescos), in the box of Christmas decorations in the loft. Last Christmas (2005) I when to take them out and the bag literally just flaked in my hands - it was like paper and got everywhere!!!

I have 4 tesco bags in my bag with me at all times. Use them for all my shopping. People think your are weird for not accepting the carrier bags from the shop your in though. Or is it just me for thinking that?

They will give you points for taking you shopping in anything other than brand new bags - so you could take any other stores carriers in and use them

Did you know that in Ireland you get charged a 15c enviromental tax for every plastic bag that you request from any kind of shop? It's brilliant!

You can use any bags. But make sure you tell them how many bags you have used.

Charliecat, I definitely get some odd looks in shops when I say, "no it's ok, I don't need a bag." Sometimes they put it in a bag anyway as if I don't understand the implication of what I've just said...

they should sell something like a big robust bag/box type thing that you could put straight into the car. my mum used to bung everything into her wheeler!

you can use any bags for this not just tescos.

i live in germany and they charge you for carrier bags to try and encourge you not to use plastic ones. most people use plastic folding crates and lidl sell reuseable cloth bags for 30c each. we will probably still use these when we come back to the uk

we always take a rucksack shopping so never use bags anyway - preparing for that day when we finally return to Ireland...

You only get 1 point for 1 bag though, not for how many Tesco bags your shopping would have gone in, iyswim.

I have one of those huge Sainsburys shoppers, it holds the equivalent of 3-4 Tesco bags, but I still only get 1 point for it

Tescos are about the worst for bags on their home shopping though aren't they? One day I had a bag with just one magazine in it and another bag with a nappies in it (which of course has its own little carry handle anyway)
I think this is just a publicity thing.

BTW - I always have a little cloth bag in my handbag for shopping or I put stuff straight in the pushchair basket - you do get some funny looks but I guess it might be just a matter of time before more people realise!

I posted about this yesterday under different topic - Ive wrote to tesco to find out if I buy 10 things and put each in a reused bag, will i get 10 points, (and pop the bags into my folding crate) but put them all in 1 bag, I only get one...no response yet tho

Dh got a point for not using a bag for a huge bag of pasta with its own carry handle. Same for the nappies.

We have found in the past that the staff were a bit reluctant to pack into the bags we'd taken with us - even the Tesco Bags for Life. Are they getting better now?

You can currently get a free jute bag from Sainsbury's if you buy 5 items of So Organic fruit, veg or salads. It's the most gorgeous bag, and I'm looking forward to taking it to Tesco's...
