My husband and I agreed to be guardians of twin girls (aged 7) should their parents (distant cousin) be unable to look after them. The father has early onset dementia arising from chemo for colon cancer. So we understood the arrangement would only be implemented should something also happen to the mother which they indicated was unlikely. I have now discovered that whilst the husband is late 50s, the mother is 80 in November. Her age had never been disclosed to us and as she is well-preserved we assumed she was 50s too. (Children were born by surrogate) We understood the risk factor to be low but now with this new knowledge the likelihood of the guardianship kicking in seems inevitable rather than unlikely. We have a girl of four and a baby due in November and don't feel that we can now honour the agreement (made last year). It's very awkward but we feel we have to put our family first. WWYD?
