What happens if I can't get a work ref, only character ref's ??

Will try to be brief. I'm a single mum of 3, trying my hardest to find a job. My last job was part time in a shop over 4 years ago.

A while ago, I asked the assistant manager for a ref for a job, and she wasn't happy to give it because she couldn't remember me. She suggested I ask one of my old work colleagues who had recently been promoted to supervisor.

I did and they were happy to do it so all was fine. However, there has now been a slight falling out between myself and this person and they are refusing to say wether they are still happy to give a ref, and I have an interview on Tuesday.

I am planning on giving their name anyway and hping that if they are contacted, they get over themselves and give the ref anyway, but if they don't then I have absolutly no other work related ref I can give as they are all too long ago.

Am feeling quite upset and worried over this as I know most places insist on at least one work ref.

You may find that given it has been a number of years since you worked that your potential new employer is not interested.

I wouldn't give name if unsure - say all who would be able to give a reference have now moved on.
