has anyone ever managed to hand in their notice and ...

then be paid for their notice period but not have to work it?????

I want to quit my job because i'm unhappy with how I've been treated. my notice period is three months. I really don't want to have to work out my notice period, but at the same time can't afford to be without pay for three months

(by end of the 3 month period i would hope to have found some kind of job (have a couple of interviews coming up) and also dh's is getting a promotion and his salary will nearly double, to a level where we could pay all bills etc from his salary alone if we needed to)

has anyone managed to get their work to agree to this

Could you try and negotiate the notice period? Three months is very long. That way you could possibly take holiday for some of it.

I wish! my bad treatment was around time off for ill health, and needing to work part time. I used up all my holidays to keep some money coming in while I was unwell If I'm not back full time by end of June then I would get dismissed. but i'm concerned about the potential stigma of being dismissed, adn the difficulty this would create for finding another job, so I'm thinking it would be better to hand my notice in.

I can't imagine many companies would want to pay someone for 3 months when they were getting nothing for it hmm. I've heard, very occasionally, of people not having to work 1 month's notice when they were about to go to work for a direct competitor and there were possible security concerns - the person was escorted to their desk to take their personal effects, and had to hand in their badge and be escorted off the site!

But that's pretty extreme, and involved someone who had access to fairly sensitive material.

I think you'd be better off trying to get the notice period reduced, then concentrate on finding something else in that timeframe.

should have said - I do deal with confidential material etc. If my company made me redundant / dismissed me, I would not be required to work out my notice...

but thats why I'm asking really. I realise it sounds like a weird concept, but at the same time, if it saved my work having to dismiss me (and thereby face a potential unfair dismissal claim due to their poor treatment of me... ) mightn't they consider paying my notice pay?

It might be worth asking - it's certainly not usual, but you can always try discussing it with them and see what they say. If they'd sooner you were gone, and it was an easy way for them to achieve it, then maybe they'd agree.

Our company quite often do this, although its usually for one month not three Worth asking!

I wouldnt ask but hand in your notice first and see what they say/do. As they might tell you you dont have to work your notice (if you ask first they might negotiate your 3 months salary down IYSWIM)

Dancingqueen, merely dealing with confidential info is not enough for your company to consider paying out your notice period. If there was a fear that you might take that info to a competitor or at least were going to work for a competitor, they would probably be only too happy to get rid of you, otherwise it will probably be business as usual!

I'd say there is a good chance you will be put on "garden leave" if you deal with most confidential matters.

Usually if there's a worry at all that an employee could be in a position to sabotage things they are immediately put on garden leave.

If you give your notice in writing, giving 3 months, there's a chance they will do this for the full three months. This has happened in every company I've worked for when someone has handed in their notice and they've been in similar situations to you.
