Finding work after being a sahm for 6 years

I feel so worthless, I am looking for a job after being a sahm for 6 years and I seem unemployable because of this, any references I have and work experience is dating back so many years, as soon as I say that I havent worked for so long and that I am a mum, they seem to write me off straight away, despite my enthusiasm and willingness to do anything at all! Even cleaning jobs I've asked about have asked if I have any experience, well yes, that is what I've been doing for the past 6 years, cleaning!
I just wish someone would give me a chance!

Have any of you gone back to working after a long period at home, how did you do it?

I've been at home for 21/2 years now. I started doing voluntary work at my dds school but have decided to go back to college (again) to get a classroom assistants qualification to hopefully find some paid work.
I used to do a quite specialised job that i won't find locally (would have to commute into london bleugh!) so apart from shop work re-training is my only option.
Have you thought about going back to college?

What sort of work did you do Seashells?
6 years isn't so long.

If its any consolation I went back to part time work after being a SAHM for 11 years so anything is possible! I went for a few interviews with the attitude that, after so long, so what if I didn't get the job - it was their loss! I also 'bigged up' anything I had done, like Secretary of PTA, bits of voluntary work and a some basic computer training. Something will crop up and you will get something. Having said that, I'm not working again at the moment - did 3 years in the job and got fed up with it so am looking again! Good luck!

Hi Seashells

Dont dispair!!! I bet there is a job just round the corner for you.

I used to work with a lady who had been at home for about 12 years - this was her first job back after her 2 kids. She was one of the most organised and efficient people i have ever worked with!

Good luck
