temporary redundancy - what is it?

My brother has been told he will be made temporarily redundant. He believes he will be paid for one week in 13 if he makes himself available for short pieces of work. Is this allowed?

If it is, how does this impact on ability to claim benefits?

You can't be temporarily redundant. Redundancy is a form of dismissal, either your employment is terminated or it isn't.

Having said that, there is such a thing as temporary lay-off, which is being asked not to come into work for periods of time because there isn't enough. Rather than explain it, probably best to read about it here to decide whether this is what's happening, and whether his employer has the right to do it unpaid.

Also here about claiming redundancy if he's been laid off unpaid for a certain period of time.
