DH made redundant last week, but just got this call from his boss, what would you make of it??

DH told he was redundant last wednesday, but the company he was contracted to (employed by company that sub-contracts engineers) has kicked up a stink because he was the only one really qualified to fulfill the role to satisfy prime contractor. Now he has got a call from his boss asking him to attend a meeting 100 miles away on Thursday. DH said he wasn't happy traveeling at his own expense if it is just to sign forms and say good bye etc. Boss says it 'will be in his best interests' to attend. What can this mean? Don't want to get too excited, but his week of 'consultation' ends today so he's officially redundant. Why do they want to see him and not discuss over the phone??

Did they follow due process with the redundancy (step 1 letter, followed by a meeting)? Was he fairly selected for redundancy?

Certainly his boss should be giving him more details as to why he is being asked to attend the meeting or offering to pay travel costs (assuming that it is not his usual workplace).

i wouldnt pussy foot about and i would want to speak to the man making the decisions here.

why do you want me there.what benefit is it to me?

you made me redundant, are youplanning to re-employ me?

i have plans and i am willing to change them, but i must have a definitive reason.

At the moment, if there is any chance of a job - grab it with both hands !

We're heading into at least 2 years of further recession, more job losses, the prospect of higher taxes and lower pay increases (if you're lucky enough to have a job).

Maybe it's not for his boss to confirm or deny whether there is a job at the end of this meeting but, if he's 'in the know' perhaps this is his way of giving you the heads up ! Must surely be in your husband's best interests to always 'look willing' ?

Good luck !

He's tried all of this, but he says doesn't want to talk about it on the phone. He still has his diesel card, and they have now said he can use that to fill up, so at least we get a full tank of diesel if nothing else
Since he found out he was being made redundant, two of DDs school friends' parents are in the same boat, so it's really scary times at the mo. In a way I shall be really angry if they offer to take him back, because of all the upset and grief of the last week. But as the manager of the main contract has said to the, he's the customer and he wants DH back. I'm also worried if they take him on will some one else have to be let go. Don't want any one else to go through what we are going through. DH has been offered a new job (amazingly without interview) to start 12th January so feel EXCEPTIONALLY lucky we have options

Great to have options - I hope it works out for you both.

Well if the diesel is being paid for then I think he should go and you should encourage him to do so.

We aren't in a normal employment climate and it is always good to have options It is very concerned of you to be worried about others and their families, but at present I would worry about your own family.

Sounds good to me, maybe the cust wants t offer a job with them direct?

I don't blame his boss for not wanting to have the kind of discussion it sounds as though it might be over the phone. He is having the diesel paid for and can't lose anything by going along, so he should do so.

Agree with Flowery .

If he's having his travel paid then he might as well go along and find out what's going on. If it's sensitive (like offering him the job direct), they probably don't want to go into it on the phone.

A different matter if they were planning on him paying for the 200 mile round trip...
