What are an employers responsibilities?

I have taken on 3 assistants (I'm a childminder btw)

They do not work school holidays (they want to stay at home with their own children)

They work up to 6 (ish) hours a week

Do I have any responsibilities with regard to Holiday/Sick and Maternity Pay.

I pay half if they are sick - but nothing if their child is sick (I normally encourage their children to come with them - so they have no childcare costs) and the earn free childcare from me (1 hr per week worked)

Have I got myself into a sticky situation

sorry, being nosy(am Xena's sister)have been watching your other thread..if your assistants bring their children with them, do they count in your numbers?

Yes they do.....so occasionally they can't - but I'm always up front about it.

With one (A3) I have said that she can bring her 2 DT's 4 weeks out of 8 (as I have a child on a shift pattern) The other weeks the DT's are with her mum - who lives with her.

The other option would be for her to put them in Nursery on that day (they attend 3 days a week)

Do you happen to know what the allowance per sq foot that you need to have per child is....... if that made any sense at all?

OK so they are entitled to 4 weeks pay....but i can say when the go - so during the 13 weeks holiday.

eg if A1 gets £17.50 a week - therefore for the 13 weeks of the holidays I could pay her
17.50 X 4 = £70
£70/13 = £5.40 a week

Is that right??

Now I need to learn bank holidays -

Using A1 again each Bank Holiday she gets £17.50/5 (as she works 1 day a week)=£3.50 added to her pay every week there is a Bank Holiday

So CDay.Boxing Day. New Years Day, GF & EM, MayDay,Spring BH & A BH = 8 days ??

8x£3.50 = £28.00

So total extra for the year is £98

Can I divide that by the no of hrs she does and increase their hourly rate by that much

ie 3.5 x 39 = 136.5 Hrs

98/136.5 = 72 per hour

I don't think that you can show it as extra on her HR you have to show it as a seperate payment on her pay slip

3 children at 25 sqft is 75 sqft so that a louge that is 12 ft x 6ft6 without any furniture

So an average lounge with a settee and a TV would 'just' do

Xena - thought you'd gone to bed! All too riveting here, eh! I will check, but I am sure when my house was measured, they want 25 square feet (ie. 5'x5') per child. I'm not sure if each child is meant to stay in their own square or not.
