Discussing pay

I work in an office where people have found out others have got a pay rise. One person brought this to the manager and asked if they could have a rise small percent. They were told that it is a disciplinary matter to discuss pay and everybody has been called in to be told we must not discuss. The person who reported it has been told they must report in writing which member of staff told them or face a disciplinary . Does this sound lawful ?

Nope.

There is specific provision in the Equality Act stating that any workplace rules banning discussion of salary are unenforceable and people can’t be penalising for discussing pay.

This article gives a reasonable summary www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.peoplehr.com/blog/2018/05/09/you-cant-stop-employees-discussing-their-pay/amp/

That's interesting as there is a clause in my contract that prohibits me from discussing pay. I was also told this by my manager when I started. However the word is it's because we all get paid different and they tell us we are all on the same....Hmm

They can’t enforce that @Tanfastic or penalise you for breaching it.

Glad to hear that. Thanks.
