Work

0 hours contract

Basically I took a 0 hours contract job back in June. I've been doing between 18-22 hours weekly. When I started I explained to them I needed to work 16 hours as a single parent and claiming working tax credits.
They said it's a 0 hours contract and it wouldn't be a problem.
So 2 staff members are leaving, 1 is going on MAT leave and the other has handed in notice to leave on Nov 2nd.
They've taken on 2 new members of staff that are doing some trial shifts.
Week beginning 30th Oct they have only given me 9 hours as new staff are doing their trials.
I just think it's so unfair especially as I've worked all the days that I've been asked and never called in sick etc
I'm not supposed to claim WTC by only working 9 hours .
I feel like leaving and looking for another job as think 0 hour contract jobs never treat you right.

Is it just for that week or will it be 9 hours going forward?

She said going forward I will get more again but it's just where they need to sort staffing issues as 2 staff leaving and 2 staff starting. Shouldn't affect my hours though, no other staff seem to have had their hours cut. There is only 2 of us that are part time though everyone else is full time

Did they say when your hours would be increased again?

Foes the other part time worker have more than 9 hours?

The other part timer is the one going on MAT leave so she finishes Nov 2nd too.
Then I'll be the only part timer I think.
I feel upset as I feel used but maybe I'm over thinking it.

The other part timer still has her normal shifts 24 hours

It's 0 hours contract so they have rights to drop your hours

I know it's their right just seems unfair.
I'm not meant to work under 16 hours.
If I left would I have to give notice if it's 0 hours?

No it is fair. As it's a 0 hours contract job, which is what you have.

It's a pain in the arse though, and if you NEED 16 hours, then you should defo look for another job. Or just stop claiming working tax.

Ok. I'm guessing no notice is required to leave.

Yes, it is a zero hours contract. Neither side is tied to a certain number of hours per week. You are feee to turn down hours or look for a second job. If the arangement is no longer working for you and doesn't give you what you need, then look for something else, as you should in any job. You should never rely on promises that aren't backed up by a written ageeement.

It sounds like the reduction is only very temporary though?

Zero hours contracts are a disgrace. I'm not saying that employers should only have part-time jobs of 16 hours or more but the uncertainty must make lots of people feel sick with worry.

Yes and the job wasn't advertised as a zero hours job.
It's been ok so far but they had a lot less staff then!
Now they are getting new staff and I'm worried my hours will really be cut.
I had my appraisal couple weeks ago and everything was positive they didn't have anything bad to say so I don't think it's my work.
They even said I get more done as a part timer than some of the full time staff as it's a fresh pair of legs when I come in.
It's made me realise I don't mean anything to them if they can just cut my hours like that. Obv they don't care if I left.
