Hi all,

I am applying for a job with the civil service. The job application is competency based.
I have had my current job for many years so this is all new to me & I feel way out of my depth!!
I have been working on the competencies all day & am stuck on one particular one.
It is ‘Seeing the big picture’ I just for the life of me cannot come up with an example from my current job which is working for a high street bank! (I have done various roles in a bank branch & am now call centre based speaking to mortgage advisors)
Can anyone help with any examples please?

Thank you x

Have you downloaded the competency descriptions? Use the keywords throughout all of your examples to make sure you for what they want. 2 ticks, will find a link.

Get yourself some coloured post it notes. On colour 1 put the job requirements. On the second colour put all the competencies. On the 3rd your Star story. On the 4th the outcome of the story. Match one colour post it in each snake
Write one paragraph per competency and give it a sub heading of the competency...

Seeing the big picture are related to strategic thinking...so things like option analysis, corporate risk, work with ambiguity, scenario creation etc.

Seeing the big picture’

What they want to see here OP is that you appreciate how what you do in your job fits into the bigger picture for the organisation where you work, how you contribute to the company's overall success.

Using a general example of customer service advisor in a bank, you'd say something like "in my role, a customer wasn't sure which was the best account to deposit £10,000 for a year, so I outlined the features of 2 account options that could be suitable for the amount of money and term of investment. I explained I wasn't permitted to give them financial advise due to FCA regulations, but delivered the facts so they could make an informed choice. My actions supported my bank's strategy of personalised customer service according to FCA Guidelines."

Have a look at the business strat. How do you see yourself fittin in with that? So for instance, if you worked on the counters in the bank, you interacted with customers to make a good impression of the bank, upsold, dealt with queries etc all of which improved customer experience which helped your bank to become the largest bank in the world.
