Being a carer in a nursing home was pretty hard going. I came face to face with a lot of death for the first time in my life. I’ve never known tiredness like it. And there was so much that needed to be done with never enough time to do it. I found a lot of it heartbreaking.

It was so dull, there was nothing to do, the staff were horrible to me and left me to answer phones while they all went off on their xmas party.

Working 1 in 2 shifts as a junior doctor some 200 years ago.
I still shudder at the memory of being 'on' from Saturday 8am until Monday 5pm with no guaranteed rest breaks.

Banking call centre making outgoing calls to customers to get them to go in to their local branch for a ‘financial review’. Which was actually so that the bank could get them to take out a credit card / overdraft / loan.

I hated it. A lot of elderly customers used to get very confused about their bank phoning them, a lot of people were abusive or rude to me on the phone and my pay was on performance so I had ridiculous targets to meet.

If I left my station for any reason, I had to log it on chart and hand it to my supervisor at the end of my shift. Once, when I’d dared to go to the toilet twice in four hours, I got my chart back with my two toilet trips highlighted in yellow and ‘is there something you need to tell me?!?’ scrawled all over it.

It was not a good place to work.

I had a summer job in a food factory working 8am-midday for eight weeks when I was a student. It was ok despite being repetitive, because I was working at a machine with six other students and we listened to Radio 1 and chatted as we worked. We enjoyed trying to beat our daily target, and we were paid quite well.

I returned the following summer but with changes ...I was offered 6-10pm and I had to clean all the sugary gunk off the machines, working in isolation so no chats and no radio. I lasted two weeks.

Working for a retail company at their head office, there was not enough people for the work that needed doing, a horrible atmosphere and the owner in particular was ridiculously rude and would make homophobic jokes constantly to one of my colleagues

Telephone market research. Trying to find people to agree to talk to you then having to follow the script on the screen was painful.

Working in retail 8 hours a week when I was 17. I would be at college 9-4 then work there 4:30-8:30 on evenings and be home for 10. It was terrible.

The assistant manager was horrid. He would constantly be trying to catch me out making mistakes, and would shout at me threatening me with my job for talking even though I was one of the quietest most hard working members of staff.

He once lectured me about how I should be volunteering my time to do his paperwork. Unbelievable

Packing pyrex into boxes. The glass was still hot so it burnt your fingers, the conveyor belt moved too quick, the boxes were really fiddly to make up and the tape machine tried to cut your fingers off everytime.

Selling double glazing over the phone when I was 16. The room was a huge table with numerous phones scattered higgeldy piggeldy all over it and lots of ripped up phone books. It was also a fug of smoke as everyone was constantly smoking there. Including me.

We had to rip a page out of the phone book and try to sell double glazing from a script. We were told to push more with elderly people as they were more likely to buy it. And we were never paid for any leads generated as the manager took them for herself. It was awful

Working in a bar, 9pm-7am shifts, Manager only let me on the bar when we were short of other girls (he actually told me I had to ‘work on my face’) but to be fair all I did was clean up puke and broken glass and lug crates, bins and tubs of ice around, so I probably wasn’t the chirpiest.

Working in a T bag factory as a student. Every so often the machine wouldn't fit the lid of the cardboard tea bag box, so I had to stand by the side of the conveyor belt and tap the lid down every 20 boxes or so. For 8 hours a day.

It was marginally better than the job i had in the margarine factory scraping out margarine from tubs where the machine had put more (or less) than it should have into the tub. For eight hours a day.

Worked at farmfoods when I was 16 for 3 weeks, you had to type every single item in manually in to a old fashioned type till and you had to rush as fast as possible, my 3 rd shift there I was down a couple of pounds and they accused me of stealing. Got my sister to drop off my uniform and never went back.

Peeling boiled eggs by hand in an egg factory. Shift was 5.30 am to 2pm, it was constantly 0 degrees and Everything was wet in the factory. Summer job when I was a student and all the full time workers hated me and pelted me with rotten eggs.

One of my nannying jobs. The parents didnt wish either me or them to tell their 4 year old dd off as she had such a lovely cheeky nature that they didnt want to squash. I used to arrive everyday to be told by the dd in front of the parents "fuck off out of my house, i dont want you here" i also used to get told off for their dd weeing in the playroom deliberately even though it was outside my work hours 🤔, needless to say i stuck it out till i got another job, which thankfully wasnt long!

Beating at shooting estates. We used to be kept off school to do it from about age 12. Walking through all terrain (including bog, gorse) and in all weathers with hot lead shot raining on you esp after lunch when the shooters were tanked up. I was bloody terrified and hated the whole thing.

Being a nanny to 2 boys who were so spoilt and badly behaved and parents didnt care. They used me as a nanny, cleaner, ironer etc and paid me pittance but I got somewhere to live when I didnt have anywhere else to go.

Used to work in a 'supercigs' shop whist studying not a nice place got into a huge argument with the manager because I wouldn't work an extra hour a day unpaid and walked out

As a student packing Christmas cards in a factory on a notorious estate in Bradford.
Covered in paper cuts and the permanent staff hated us as we slowed them down and they got paid per box completed. We had to go to the toilet in groups for safety and when the end of shift whistle went we had to run through the loading bay doors onto our waiting minibus before they could catch us. They had to clock out but we didn’t so they used to block the doors and not let us leave until every single one of them had clocked out.
99% were women and they used to prank any male staff - once they stripped a fork lift truck driver to his undies and clear wrapped him to a pallet.

Worked one week as a chamber maid during summer Uni holiday. It was GRIM, the other workers were hideous to me and the other student working there as we were "snobby", the guests were grubby and after a week I'd decided that life was too short to be maknig begs for tuppence ha'penny a week. So I quit.

People nice and pay ok but hospital kitchen was hard work - lifting tray of cups and really heavy piles of plates off industrial dishwasher - so hot when the plates came out gloves needed and so hot in there
Also done food factory ( m and s ready meals) and hospital cleaning as student. They were great jobs
