Stress at work

Hi everyone, I don't know what to do. I have a stressful job and I work for a company where is you do all that you can for people they will pile more and more work on to you because you get the work done. My colleague has gone off sick and will be off for a week or 2 . I am going to have to do her work as well as my own. My husband is telling me to go to the doctors and get signed off with stress but my head is telling me don't do it because I am letting people down. I really don't know what to do for the best. Can anyone give me any advice?

Put your foot down and tell them it is impossible to do the work of two people, you have enough of your own. Say that you will help out as much as you can, but it won't be a lot due to your own workload.

you have to stick up for yourself in the workplace as, sadly, no one else will do it for you

What is stressful about you job and can you talk it through to see if there is a way to change it?

In regards to the extra work load just say no. It's harder to advise without knowing what you do.

Can you ask them to get a temp in from tomorrow to help get the workload down? Even if you can get 4-5 days' help it will be something. And it gives them the message you can't be dumped on.

Speak to your line manager. "hello line manager. I realise x is off sick but I simply don't have capacity to take on her work. If there are certain of her tasks that absolutely need doing, perhaps you could let me know which tasks that normally form part of my own workload can be allocated elsewhere or not done at all?"

Agree with others. You just have to say no. I realise that is easier said than done when you are used to having a reputation as the capable one who gets things done but they're taking advantage of you if they're expecting you to do double the work for the same pay!

Is your colleague off with stress? If so they must realise they're taking the piss and should be more receptive to you saying you have too much on. They won't want you going off as well.

They wont care as long as the work gets done. So dont do the extra work. Her absence is not your problem it is the line managers. So make it their problem. They get paid to manage.
