Internal promotion not advertised

I've been working in my current workplace for about 2 years. My coworker has been there a couple of months longer, but I came in at a more senior level as I had prior experience.

My coworker was promoted to my level a month ago, but he has told my team he is also being prepped for a management position, so he is now second in department and more senior than me and my other coworkers.

I'm quite unhappy about this, because I work extremely hard, achieve similar results as him, have more experience in the field, and have been working at a more senior level for longer. I had an excellent appraisal recently, so no issues with my performance.

His promotion wasn't advertised, I would have gone for it if it was! If I hadn't got it, I would have been disappointed, but I was never even given the chance to apply.

My boss hasn't told my team that my coworker is now second in department, but he keeps having meetings with this coworker to discuss department strategies, recruitment etc, so I believe my coworker is telling the truth. I'm quite annoyed and not sure whether to bring this up with my boss, or to just find a new job.

This scenario is a notoriously difficult one to prove or act on at the moment. All you have to go on, is that your co-worker has told you about some future plan to prep him for management (which hasn't yet happened) and he's involved in meetings but that doesn't mean he's being promoted.

In your situation, I wouldn't take action at the moment, but make it clear to your manager that you are keen to explore any development opportunities. Often, unfortunately it's as much about your face fitting as it is about skills and experience. Do you get on OK with management and are you creating the right impression?

Do you have regular performance reviews and development discussions with your boss? Have you been clear about your career ambitions?
