I've recently applied for a job with a hotel... they were very unclear about hours and pay... it turns out they want me just for cover when other staff can't come in, they have also asked me to live in the hotel Saturday's Sunday's and Monday's from 9pm to 8am to be on call in case of emergencies and I'm free to leave after those hours as long as I'm back for 9pm... they want me to live in UNPAID so I asked what sort of working hours could they offer me that are paid and it turns out she can only have me there working paid for about 5 hours a week... my question is, is it right that she wants me to live in unpaid? It's for insurance purposes mainly as someone needs to be on site during the night

You need to see an employment contract to eliminate this vagueness.

Being an unpaid resident on-call is not on.

If you're on call then you're working and should be paid.

I agree, you should be paid, but are you "paid" in goods like free food & drink, room & bathroom without having to clean afterwards during the weekend?
If so and you agree to it it's a form of payment...

But wouldn't that come under the heading of room and board (eg. for a live in nanny/housekeeper), which I believe, can only be counted as £6/day towards your salary?

If someone needs to be on site for insurance and you are the only person there, then that is work and you should be paid for it.
