Should I tell my manager I'm thinking of leaving?

My finance has recently been promoted, which involves relocating from Hertfordshire to Wiltshire. We have found a house to rent, and he will be starting there at the beginning of July. I am now applying for jobs in the area, and will live with friends until I have found something.

My current work know that I’m moving house and have agreed to a few days off to move – they don’t know that I’m relocating, and that I'm seeking other work and hope leave soon.

The only problem is it’s getting quite hard to take time off for interviews. My current manager wants me to give two weeks’ notice when I want time off, but I can’t do this when, for example, I get told on a Wednesday that I have an interview on the Monday. For a couple of previous interviews I have said that the boiler was broken, and then that an electrician was coming over… but I’m starting to run out of excuses! I'm also running the risk of asking for time off, being refused, and then awkwardly having to find an excuse not to come in. Confused A friend has suggested pulling a sickie, but another said that this could reflect badly if I then go back a week later and ask for a reference. My mum has said I should just be honest, and explain what's happening.

Is honesty the best policy? Should I just tell my manager what’s going on?

Oops. Obviously I mean Fiance and not finance!

If your work know that you are moving from Herts to Wilts, I'd say it is a fairly safe bet that they are expecting you to leave! I would be honest with them. You need a good reference and if their recent impression of you is that you are constantly missing for various household crises or taking time off sick, it is unlikely to reflect well on you. Depending on what kind of work you are looking for though, you may need to move first and then find a job once you are settled.

Just to be clear - they don't know I'm moving from Herts to Wilts, but think that I am moving house locally (luckily I didn't tell them this they just assumed!).

I'm so nervous about telling them but thinking it will make things easier, as Stillunexpected has said, I don't want to leave a bad impression by suddenly taking time off.

I'd be honest with them. It sounds as if it's making you feel rather stressed, which won't help the interview process.

Id be honest with them, you have a genuine reason for leaving and it's not like you are trying to find a new job because you're not happy with the one you've got
