Hi all, looking for some advice. I'm heading into my third trimester & am suffering from terrible SPD. I'm trying everything to keep going, Physio, chiro etc but it is just getting worse. My gp has signed me off for a week to rest with a recommendation to review at the end & either go back to work on reduced hours or continue to be signed off. If I am signed off I get full pay, but if my hours are reduced by the gp, can they reduce my pay? I want to go back to work but am in too much pain to be full time, and cannot afford a pay cut.

Any advice gratefully received

I had same trouble OT advised me to go part time (work had referred me to OT outside company) BUT there was no way I could afford it do that was that. Was all rather pointless.

It's not reduced pay as such but you'd be paid youe normal wage for the hours you are working, and the missing hours would be classed as sick leave. If you only get SSP for those, your salary would come out lower than if you'd worked your normal hours. The hours you should have work can't just be taken from you though - they have to be classes as sick leave.

They only have to pay you for hours actually worked. If you're back at work not signed off sick then you're back at work.

However in circumstances where you would be on full pay if off sick completely, clearly it makes sense for you to be coming back to work, therefore if they are sensible, they will allow you to return part time on full pay rather than having you sit at home on full pay.

You need to ask your employer to confirm whether your full pay will continue if you return part time on a temporary basis.

Flowery is quite right - your pay will be determined by your contract and any agreement with your employer.

SSP wouldn't be payable as a top up payment for reduced hours in each day, as to qualify for SSP you must be incapacitated for a full day, and if you do any work at all then that day doesn't count for SSP purposes.

Thanks everyone your wisdom is appreciated!! it seems mad to be better off not working at all, but will have a chat with the boss & see what we can do. I really enjoy my job - and am already bored so want to get back to it.

Not quite the same but I returned to work after sickness (after being paid full pay) to a phased return I only got paid for the hours I did. Not every employer is the same though
