Anyone else work in a Uni/HE role on a temp contract?

I'm an hourly paid lecturer and just wondered how usual these things are for HE employers?

  • Only being offered a contract on a month by month basis (no option for fixed term or longer term contract)


  • No paid admin time.


  • No leave allowed in term time and only a percentage of contracted hours in holiday periods.


I can't actually complain about any of this as I'll just be out of a job if I do but wondered if the above were usual practice?

Most universities will have a number of temporary roles of this nature to cover fluctuations in student numbers, study leave and maternity leave etc amongst core academic staff. I assume you were aware of the nature of the contract when you signed it? Most hourly rates for temporary teaching staff will include preparation and marking time. Do you think the role was misrepresented?

Hi icetip - I've been on a temp contract for 7 years now off and on. These are new changes to our t & c and just wondered how standard they were.
