Unpaid holiday during maternity leave?

I'm expecting my first baby at the end of the year so am planning to go on maternity leave late November/Early December. My manager recently took me through the company's policy mentioning that, while I would accrue my normal holiday allowance during my maternity leave, this would be unpaid. Is this correct or does it simply depend on the employer?

I was under the impression you continued to accrue holidayas normal hence why some people took it all in one go at the end of their maternity leave to delay their return to work. I've had a look online but can only find confirmation that leave is accrued as normal, not whether it's paid or not.

Sounds like you need to take it, rather than get paid in lieu of holiday (ie I asked for 20 days accrued holiday to be paid, rather than extending 4 day weeks for longer (having been told part time wasn't an option).
I'd ask for clarification.

Any holiday you accrue is paid as per your normal holiday.

No it's paid. You should also get your bank holidays in lieu if they are not part of your normal holiday allowance.

Unless your holiday is normally unpaid he's wrong. Perhaps he means what nextphase says?

Definitely paid along with any bank holidays you miss while on maternity leave.

Unpaid holiday is not holiday, it's unpaid leave, and it's not something you accrue or are entitled to. Your entitlement is for 5.6 weeks paid time off a year, so what you accrue during maternity leave in terms of holiday entitlement is paid by definition.

It may be worth checking your company's policy on carrying unused leave to the next year. If the holiday year runs jan-dec, and you are on mat leave (for example) nov13-July14 any leave you are due for 2013 should be added to start of mat leave or you may lose it.

Or holiday entitlement runs from Jan to Dec so if you have any holiday left you would take this (paid) before you start your mat leave.

And then you would add any holidays occurred whilst on leave to the end of your mat leave which would be paid.

Your manager is wrong.

Sorry not to come back for an update - thanks for all your responses. Ask thought, it was my manager who had got the wrong end of the stick and it was simply that I couldn't be paid for in lieu but would have to take the accrued holiday.
