I have to apply for my job as they are looking for redundancies :( I can't do these stupid forms, I get the idea and the s.t.a.r.plan etc I just don't seem to be able to get strong ideas to hit the criteria. Does anyone have good examples I could steal use for inspiration

Oh god, they are awful. We have them at work, plus our competencies aren't even competencies (long story) so you don't even know what you're aiming at.

I find it helps to:

  • work out what the basic point is of the competency
  • think of my best example that fits the competency
  • write it out in a vaguely STAR-like way
  • spend HOURS and HOURS focusing the wording, tightening it up and making it not just a good example of the competence but also an exercise in writing in a way which will score points.

My work has a word limit which contributes to the HOURS, but still competency applications are less about the examples and far more a writing test. Stupid things.

Interacting with others, judgement and responsibilty, customer focus, influencing, decision making

I work in an office dealing with public, some of whom can get quite angry so I think I could give an example of that say for interacting with others but it also wants you to show that whilst you were interacting with customer show how you were interacting with your team...

Could you use something where a dealing with a customer moved on to dealing with the team? e.g. customer commented on an issue, you dealt with them, and then communicated to the whole team the incident and what needed to be done to resolve?

Can you wait til Monday? I've got compentancy cards for most of those, but would scan them in. pm me your e-mail address if you'd like them.
