Underhand ways to get part time hours!!

I need ideas!!!! apparently i'm indispensable a bloody mug and Job Share Will Not Work according to manager.

How do I maintain professional integrity while screaming and stamping my feet with a BUT IT'S NOT FAIR level tantrum?

and yes I know that part time hours aren't a right - that i'm lucky to have a job in these times and my manager isn't Beelzebub.

But that doesn't mean that a little light fantasy prior to a Monday morning can't be a little therapeutic??

37 down to 22 hours spread over 5 days during core business hours

The problem is everyone else apart from my manager is part time, so I am unofficial office cover

37hours a week - the 22 you're proposing to do leaves a 15hr shortfall which is then 3 hours a day.

If the wont job share and you're indispensable could you ask to loose an hour at the start and end of the day, if necessary as a bargaining tool make up an hour a day in the evening at home? Could you ask to start with a one month trial of coming in an hour later and working half of lunch?

It's the start and end of the days that are the problem - I'm the only one in between 3-5.15 which is when I would want to be doing school pick up.

It's specifically the office cover that my maanger wants sorting

and I can't be in two places at once - face desk at the rich irony

I am toying with the idea of running a mini cab office from my desk between those hours.... no one would know....

Explain to me your working hours over the days of the week and I can then try to work out what you need to do.

i don't think anyone's indispensable btw - I think my manager just doesn't want increased work or the bother of recruiting a person/disruption.

I currently have flexi time but work 8:30 to 17:15 with half an hour for lunch , this credits up my flexi which I take for kid related emergencies.

Perhaps you should point out to your manager that if you job shared then he would always have cover at that time as you would then cover for each other when on annual leave

How are you currently managing the start and finish time, are your DCing in breakfast and after school or childminder?

And how many DC do you have?

So in theory They can't justify not letting you come in later in the mornings?

manager feels that it would be discordant for the team, as there are five part timers, there wouldn't be enough continuity that's provided by a full time member.

Got 2dcs in long days at nursery 8:00 - 17:30, which has worked really well for all of us - but things change :)

ant In the mornings I could drift in when I liked in theory - but it's the evenings which are really tough at the moment

By tough I mean planning with military precision the pick up, 15 min walk home, dinner prepared in 15 mins then half hour wind down, bath, story and bed.

I've been doing it for four years but I can't see me keeping up the pace while the eldest is in primary school - would like some time to do homework and get to know her day.

I think you need toas for a meeting with your manager to discuss flexible working.

Could one of the part time employees be flexible with their hours to aid your request possibly?

Sorry by exact I mean we have the same job title, role and responsibilities we just work in different offices.

pissy tried discussing openly with my manager but they're a closed book - tried to get them to open up about what exactly the team needed ref office coverage, but she just said that I needed to put request in formally. There is no two way dialogue like i'd hoped for.

My opposite is in the same position as me so I doubt she'd be interested in working later, but there's no harm in trying :)

If the role is exactly replicated in another office part time how can your manager justify it wouldn't work in your office?
