Finding work for my DH (industrial engineer) after immigrating to the UK

Apologies in advance for the long post riddled with worries, questions and insecurity Wink

My DH and I are planning on moving to the UK in the summer of 2012. He?s an industrial engineer who is currently working as the operations manager in a company in the semi-conductor industrial. His previous job was production manager at the same company.
We understand that he won?t get a job at the same level he?s currently at with no UK work experience, and he?s even willing to going back to work as an entry-level industrial engineer if he can?t get a job in a management position. But since he is the main earner in the family and we have 3 DDs we?re concerned that he won?t be able to get any job in his field due to the fact that he?ll be a foreigner and won?t have any local references/work history.
English is his second language ? although he did study it for years at school and has been with me (a native Eng speaker who is a qualified English teacher) for 14 years so he?s completely fluent.
We?re both very excited about moving to the UK, but I must admit that moving to a new place when he doesn?t have promise of work is frightening to say the least. But since he can only apply for work once we have our visas finalized ?which will be 3 months before we arrive so around April ? we don?t seem to have any other option... Hmm
I?ve heard there are job centers and agencies that can help you find work, and I?m wondering how and when it would be best to find and then contact some of them?
We have friends and family in various parts of the UK but will eventually settle wherever DH will have the best job options available?but how do we figure that out? We?ve been looking online at various companies in the semi-conductor industry but does anyone have any information about areas in the UK that have more (low-level) high-tech industry/semi-conductor centers than other places?
I telecommute for an American-based company so we will have some money coming in after we move?but only about 1500 to 2000 pounds a month ? but that?s not enough to keep a family of 5 without dipping into our savings every month until DH finds a job?
ARGGHH Confused can you tell how stressed I am about all this? LOL
Any advice/information anyone can give would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Job Centres are government run and will probably only help you when you have a visa. There are lots of recruitment agencies some that specialise in Industrial Engineers - best to contact then around April and say you're looking for work.

As for area you can't do wrong with the M4 corridor for high tech work. The M4 Corridor is anywhere along the M4 motorway that runs from London to Swansea (though the term M4 corridor generally applies to the London -> Bristol Section).

Job centres will not be useful -mainy much lower paid work
other kind of specilist recruitment agencies would be helpful but I think it would be much better once you have your visas -
website telegraph newspaper is a good place to look for engineering jobs
also might be worth joining the relevent professional society -what is his original engineering qualification
engineering is a very international profession so I am not sure that no UK work experience will be a massive barrier provided he is flexiable about what he goes for

Thanks Grevling and AnOtherName!
We have friends near Banbury and friends in Milton Keynes who both love the areas they're in so we will definitely be looking at some places west of London and the M4 corridor.
DH is a qualified industrial engineer so we will also look into registering him with any national engineering associations.
Thanks again

just to clarify the proffesional organisations are not for job hunting but if he is a member - or even could get chartered it would give him UK credibiliy -
these are examples - but I am sure if they are a fit -there would be others

@ seb1 -- thanks for the link.
A lot of the semi-conductor industry seems to be moving east -- doesn't it :P
DH's company (makes tools for companies that make chips) recently moved most of their production lines to China. DH was actually in charge of the whole project of getting the lines there, training the new workers etc...
We're thinking he can apply for jobs listed for production managers, project managers and industrial engineers.

@AnOtherName Yeah, I got what you were meaning about joining the associations Wink Being a registered member of a local association will look good on his CV/give him some more credibilty and will hopefully open some doors.
Thanks for your links. We'll look into getting his qualifications officially recognised.

What equipment does he make and I'll see if I can think of anything else.

My BIL works in a similar role and he's from America, when he was moving from the west coast of the US to live with my sister (they're in Glasgow) he used these people from what I remember (government body - not a recruitment agency, although they did point him in the direction of one that got him a job - I don't remember the name of the agency sorry) - because he was in such a specialised role they helped with his visa applications and everything like re-location stuff too.

You might be worth approaching them for some "all-around" support on relocation (not just approaching recruitment agencies only)?

woops here is their jobs bit, forgot to post that.

BIL didn't apply online so can't say he mentioned any experience therre, i think he emailed them or something (would ask for details but BIL is in scotland and i'm not, so not easy to get more info from him just now).

good luck!

ooh oh I just spotted this too: specific semi conductor business profiles for the area BIL works in (I won't name his employer, mainly because i can't remember which one he ended up with Grin). make sure you've added these to your potential list:

Dialog Semiconductor
Micrel Semiconductor

@ seb1 -- his company makes the needles that sew the gold thread in chips.

@ gaaagh -- thank you so much for the info and links :)
