Don't think there is a law about it.

You need to check your companys policy.

when i was commuting to work everyday via car, i took a days holiday for any day i couldn't get due to snow. if we were late, they'd just let that go, wouldn't have to make the time up.

Are you part time. If not, you need to take up that holiday with them!

They can't actually force you to take holiday for the day - they need to give advance notice to demand you take holiday on a particular day. The law would be a bit iffy even if it was in your handbook or contract that they could do that. However, they can make you take it unpaid.

day by day basis. So far as is reasonable we are expected to make up time
I left early today with my line manager's blessing but all the time has already been made up.

It sounds as if you must be part-time if you only have 7.5 days holiday so could you offer to change days and make the time up elsewhere?
