Assessment for package of care and costs

My DF needs a carer to come in daily and give medication and a meal. He is not on any benefits. How much of savings is he allowed before he has to pay for his own care? How are savings and living expenses calculated? I seem to recall someone telling me that if he has less than 16K in savings he has to pay for his care. We want to make sure he has enough savings to pay for his funeral, is there anyway of ring-fencing this?

Thanks

Also - he lives in a council flat, so doesn't have any property.

£23,250 is the amount of savings allowed before care is paid for.
Does he get attendance allowance? Worth looking at- non means tested.
Not sure of the rights and wrings but he could buy a funeral package now? Perhaps consult age uk.

Thank you so much, I will check it out. No he doesn't get attendance allowance. I've heard of this but not yet applied.

www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance
Non means tested.....order a paper copy by phone which will be date stamped so if accepted backdated.
Get help from carers uk or age uk to complete the forms to get the language right.

And sandwich tip about ordering by phone saved us £300 too.
an average funeral cost is £4500 can help reduce funds also there is an annual allowed tax gift of £2500 Per tax year if you look at Gov.uk website and you can apply for an extra year. Check this out before April 5 as potentially could allocate three allowable tax gifts for 18/19 19:20 and then from April 6 20/21
