What do I do about my DM?

To cut a very long story short, my DM (75) has a 30+ year history of mental illness. Over the last few months she’s been involved in an online ‘relationship’ with an American who is supposedly working in Africa for the UN.

This of course is all a load of rubbish. We’ve tried (DB and myself) to stop it by trying to talk sense into her but she’s having none of it. It transpires that she’s sent around £15k our to this person and is intending to send more. Her house is held in trust and the money cannot be accessed, but she’s now asking to release some capital for ‘home improvements’. DB and I will not allow this and she’s being very vitriolic, saying we don’t want her to be happy, we’re ruining her life blah, blah, blah.

We’ve already been to the police and because she’s well, there’s nothing they can do. Her dr had stopped her medication, and all this has got a lot worse since then. We are at our wits end and don’t know how to get help.

Hi,
Would a letter to her GP make any difference? See if you can raise concerns, I did this with a neighbor I knew had issues and I felt that they were being taken advantage off. it took a lot of phone calls to get through to someone who would understand I didn't want medical records, I just wanted to let them know I was worried! They did get a local mental health nurse to go to see them in the end which i think helped.

A bit risky - but could you access her emails and contact the guy in question and let him know you have contacted the police? Might scare him away? Block any incoming emails?

Its tough as you are limited on what you can do, but if you contact who you can, at least you will know you have tried.

Can you speak to social services, her bank And their fraud line. She may be at risk of financial abuse.

Has the GP stopped her prescription, or is this a line she's spinning you to avoid taking them?
