I think your mum needs to have a check at the GPs to see what is going on, because a change in personality/behaviour can be signs of dementia.

My mum can be horrid to ds (7) but he knows her brain isn't well, and that what makes her say or do things, so it doesn't seem to upset him. We do manage things so that he's never alone with her so dh or I can intervene quickly

Very sorry to hear about your mum, I hope you can get good support for you all at this difficult time.

The GP is a good starting point and if she doesn't think that a visit is necessary, they (the GP) should be able to speak to you.
