Yesterday's report on the lack of social mobility showed data whereby for each combination of A-level grades state school students did better at degree level than their private school counterparts. Do these data show that private schools produce less able independent learners that state secondary schools.

I think it shows that private schools are much better at getting their pupils top grades and thus places at 'top' universities, regardless of their innate intelligence. Not a surprise really.

Does it show that some state educated kids are not reaching their potential while at school, and only find their true potential once they get into higher education?

Does it also show that independent schools are getting the potential but that the kids in independent schools aren't necessarily brighter than the state ed kids, the schools just know how to get their capacity from them?
