6 yr old not able to keep up with maths lessons in her class

we went to see our kids' teachers last monday. my 4 and 5 year olds seem to be getting on absolutely fine-apart from my 4 yr old being a bit of a loner. however, what's worrying me more is that my 6 yr olds' teacher says she is concerned about her maths. she doesn't seem to be able to take things in. she has told us that she might have to put her on a special needs list if things don't improve which worries me as this may bring her down in other subjects. she reads ok etc. it's just maths she doesn't seem able to concentrate in. anyone any advice?

Could the teacher be more specific about what she finds difficult? If you knew what she is struggling with you can offer extra help at home. Also, IMO, she would benefit from being on the special needs list now and getting the extra help she needs rather than wait until she is in the juniors. It would be easier for her to catch up now.

Agree with Kid it may be easier to help her now. Some kids just don't get things first time and if this means any extra help,in a small group or one to one, I'd say it is worth doing. I don't think it impacts upon other subject areas, but I'm sure someone here has a child on the Action list who could verify that.

Have you thought about Kumon maths ? you can go to a centre or do it by correspondence. It works by practicising skills until the child is confident I use it with my 6 yr old boy and it is great. Costs about £45 a month but that includes all the workbooks and it is tailored for your individual child. Just do a google search and you can ask for an information pack.

I have the same issue with my 7 year old - we tried Kumon, but she just sat with tears crawling down her face, so we stopped that one. I have now signed up for extra help from the school at lunchtimes and I work thru extra workbooks with her at home.

I'm hoping we will be able to keep up by about yr 5......
