Not the worst child I've ever had in nursery, just the only one like that at the moment.

That is what ds1's miserable old scroat nursery teacher told me about him (just before his 5th birthday) after writing a pretty damning report, which contained negative comments in every single section of the report.

She said he was "not the worst child they've ever had in nursery, just the only one 'like that' at the moment [out of 52]" ... Sorry, was that meant to be encouraging?

She said he would almost certainly struggle at school in every area, particularly with literacy.

Well YA BOO SUCKS to her! That was 6 years ago and ds1 has sailed through a fantastic time in the new school we moved to with few problems, and in many ways apparently is a model pupil.

He did exceptionally well in his SATs including the highest score in English that his teacher can remember.

I hope that is encouraging to someone.

That's fantastic, roisin!
Well done to your lovely boy.

I had a similar "ya boo sucks" moment earlier in the holidays, when my extremely dyslexic DS2 (10) finished his Team Read scheme at the library, and proudly paraded around wearing his medal.

I wanted to take a photo, scan it, and staple it to the forehead of the Headteacher who said (of my five year old) that he would probably never read, and that he'd be a yob by the time he was 10.

It's taken a long time for him to be able to read fluently, but he's got there, and it is down to very hard work from DS, his fantastic home tutor, and his wonderful specialist dyslexic teacher.

Great Roisin - just you watch this is going to get a lot worse i.e. specific comments about young children with the new early years stuff i.e. people being told their child doesn't tick this box or that and then we will go back to starting school later and we can all relax for our grandchildren!
