How much should a 6 year old know about apostrophes?

DS is whiling away his Friday evening creating a "montage of Europes (sic) flags).

I asked him what was missing from the title and he looked perplexed. I suggested an apostrophe and he said "but there aren't any letters missing".

He denies all knowledge of apostrophes for other reasons.

Should I be - or let him off?

Thank you!

I don't want him going the way of his father

If he's having fun creating a montage about flags, I really wouldn't pick him up on his spelling or grammar at all unless he asked.

He's doing very well, aged 6, to know that apostrophes can represent a missing letter.

But isn't you dh an engineer or something Cali? Mine is, and rarely ventures into the world of grammar.

I think a 6 six year old specifying one context in which to use an apostrophe is very impressive! But maybe you could explain the other way as he sounds like he's capable of understanding the grammar rules.

I shall let him off then.

We spend so much time concentrating on his handwriting that I rather lose track of where he is with other things.
