Hi we are planning to move from New Jersey to Glasgow. Can anyone help to understand from which grade the primary schools starts and end?

Also when the schooling year starts and ends.

Thank In advance for the help.

Nursery from term after they are 3. Primary school starts mid August - if they are 4 by the end of February then they start that August so they are at least 4 and a half when they start. Primary 1 to primary 7 and then secondary school S1 to S6.

You normally go to your catchment school although there is the option to do a placing request to a school outwith your catchment area

Thanks a lot.

Is there any concept of good school rating or good schools in Glasgow I am talking about public schools.

Do you mean state school as opposed to private school? I don't know Glasgow schools as I'm North Lanarkshire. My 2 just went to catchment primary and then I did placing requests for secondary as it was closer than the catchment school

Yes, I mean state schools.

As we will not complete his schooling will he be getting admission for the remaining year in Glasgow or Scotland?

Glasgow is a city in Scotland. If you arrive before September or after then you will make an application for an in-year admission.

He would be in primary 6. You can’t apply until you have an address where you are living. The problem with mid year admission is that the local school may not have a P6 space, but the education department would be able to tell you which schools do have space in that year group.
Hope this helps!

I calculate they would be starting Primary 7 this year (August 2019) which is the final year of primary school. If they were starting mid year in April then they would go into primary 6.

Do you have an idea of where you would like to like in Glasgow or can you live further out? If you post in Scotsnet there are dome posters there that know Glasgow well and could direct you to good places to live and/or schools

We heard G77 area is good for schools but we honestly don't know anything about Glasgow.

It will be really helpful if any knows good places to leave.

If your DC is going into P7 in August then I’d research high schools and work backwards from there. This link talks about East Renfrewshire schools:

St Ninians has a very good reputation- if you are catholic or interested in a catholic school.

Just a general note that the Scottish system is different to the English, Welsh and Northern Irish systems so be aware when reading other threads that they may not be relevant!
