What to ask on open day?

DC1 is going on a taster day at a private school. She is currently at state primary. We have stuck it out but not happy with various things and we have come to the end of the road..

Next week she has a taster day. We have been there for a tour once before (without DC1) and liked it.

Any hints and tips on what we should ask / look out for?? (So I dont get home and realised I havent asked about a load of things...)

Many thanks

If it’s a taster day it’s about her and not you. You will drop off and collect only really!

Assuming that there will be opportunity for you to talk to staff/headteacher these are the things I would be interested in:

  • What does a typical day look like?
  • How would they support DC to settle in a new class?
  • Are classes split by ability? How is this assessed? How often do children move between groups?
  • What are the rules for behaviour etc?
  • What does the school reward good behaviour/work? What sanctions are in place for poor behaviour?
  • How is progress reported?
  • How would you contact school if you had a concern?
  • What is available for children who are sporty, musical, arty?
  • What additional activities are available? Is there a broad mix - music, chess, ICT, cookery, gardening, drama, sports?
  • Are there any compulsory trips, residentials?
  • Does the school take part in any charity days/events?

She is 7. At the end of the taster day there is a tour and a meeting with the head teacher. So I need to be ready to ask questions...

Many thanks NotEnoughCushions.
