Headteacher off sick

Hi all, does anyone know if a Headteacher is off sick when the school has to notify parents? Thanks

Not if they are just off with a bug or something. That is what the Deputy Head is for.

Yes, that's why there is a deputy. Would you expect to be notified if any other member of staff was absent?

We don't know it's all coming through rumour and the school will not advise, it's just a question are they supposed to tell us and what is seen as a significant time as it's been nearly 2 weeks and we haven't had any note from the school about directing any queries to the Deputy as we have not been told officially can't give any detail but the school is in mess and all seems like there is more to it so wanted to see if anyone had any info what the official line would be thanks

Why would you need to know? As long as someone is dealing with their emails and covering for them, what difference does it make?

Why on earth would you need to be informed?

The only exception would be if you had a pre arranged meeting, and even then a HT X isn't available can we rearrange or meet with Y?

Presumably there is a deputy head and senior management team? They’ll cover.

Why the Head is off and for how long is not your business.

A member of staff is off sick. It's a perfectly normal occurrence. The deputy is presumably Acting Head in their absence. I don't see why you would need to be informed.

Of course it’s your business. You want to know if it’s long term/serious. It will affect the school. They might not know themselves yet though. I expect they’ll tell you after three weeks.

Don't worry if no one knows the answer it's not about privacy exactly it none of our business why she is off that's not what we were asking! we aren't on here for debate or negative comments we will take it up with the appropriate channel just thought someone may know thanks anyway!

This is disgusting. Schools have Deputy Head/SMT for precisely this reason. You admit yourself that it's all through rumours, get a hold of yourselves and consider that it may well be making a somewhat challenging time for the other staff even harder. If the parents need to know anything, I'm sure that they will be informed. Otherwise you should all keep your sticky beaks out.

Poor woman is probably still feeling she has to be checking important emails and making decisions.

Our headteacherwas off for months we heard through the grapevine no special letter. It was fine the deputy stepped up.

There's no requirement, but personally, if it's more than a week or so I would be sending a letter out exactly to prevent what's going on at your school now OP.

The school isn't wrong not to tell you but, IMO, it would be better management if it did. Nothing personal obviously, but "HT is going to be away for at least...in the meantime X,Y,Z measures have been put in place to ensure school continues to be well managed etc etc. Any queries should be directed to..."

This a really weird thread. Seems to be that the OP has an agenda more than obvious on the face of a simple query.

The use of 'we' in one of the previous posts is strange, and the user name suggests that OP is involved in some sort of group has has an agenda over the headteacher's absence.

It has nothing to do with you or your group OP. Stop being so insensitive.
