GCSE result breakdown

My son will get his GCSE results in August.

Do any teachers know - do you (as teachers) get a breakdown of your students' marks? As in, were they near the next grade up/down or what they got in each paper?

Yes. In maths we get a big printout of what each students scored on each paper. We can then use this to decide whether to apply for remarks, whether to allow students to take A-level and so on.

For some reason, kids don't get given their scores in maths with their results. I think they do in other subjects.

Just to add about maths, if your DS wants to know how close he was to the boundary, he'll need to ask the maths teachers there on results day.

He said he did a fantastic paper 2 in English Lit but a mediocre paper 1 so I thought it would be interesting to see how he did in each.

So you think he'll get the breakdown? I didn't get individual marks for GCSE or A level but it was 20 years ago!

Some boards / subjects will give a breakdown of the UMS.

He should get the marks but will have to ask the teacher or exams officer, who will be available on the day, what the grade boundaries were for each subject.

I was in the year that were first to do GCSEs and I got my mark for the maths GCSE. 2 marks of a higher grade .

You don't get them for maths (but school do) but fit everything else you get the UMS mark, this is a correlation from their raw score to try and make every year fair. So for example, 51/60 was raw score for chemistry C1 last year but was 49/60 the year before. But both would score 90 UMS. I hope that makes sense (I've had a little Prossecco 😁)

And..... how do we deal with all this in a no doubt fraught and crowded Results situation, get down to enrol for sixth form...all in time to then get them on the train for Reading?

Why would you need to quickly compare raw with UMS?

You get the UMS on the results sheet which tells you how close to the grade boundary you were (90 is an A star, 80 an A, 70 B etc). If you get say 79 and needed an A for sixth form then put in for a remark.

Because some papers are harder than others they 'normalise' the raw scores by converting them to UMS, so say to get 80 UMS in 2015 might have needed 67 out of 80 raw marks, but in 2017 you might need 69 out of 80.

It's not that simple unfortunately - some have UMS of 240, some 90, some 130. It depends on the weighting of each paper in each subject. If you google say 'AQA UMS checker' it will bring you to a little calculating page so you can see what raw score equates to what UMS. You can get full UMS but this doesn't mean full marks were achieved - some papers award full UMS for say 56-60 out of 60.
It is to ensure fairness across years.

Titchy - because I thought a decision to ask for a remark would be on the raw score, and I am assuming that we would be asking for a remark there and then?

Well if the UMS for each paper is within 1 mark off the grade boundary then yes I'd say it was worth it!

Remarks can be requested usually up til middle of Sept so no rush. Teachers will be on hand OP to discuss and they will have had time to work out grade boundaries, UMS & raw scores.
