Hi All,

I've posted this on other chats, but highlighting here for your support.

Girls should not be missing school because they have their period!!!

Today, I heard about a 13yr old girl who ended up in hospital because she used socks for her period - she couldn't afford sanitary products. This is not acceptable in the UK, but it's happening and it's happening in 2017.

Please can you sign this petition to eradicate period poverty from schools. Sanitary provision is NOT a luxury, and periods are not a choice.

It's just totally, totally wrong!!!

This petition to provide free sanitary products to girls from low income families was started by a 17yr old girl.

We should support her will to help other schoolgirls.

It only takes 15 seconds to sign, I know because I just did it.

Please share so we can change this appalling situation.

We can't stand back and watch this happen to these young girls.

Oh gosh, of course I agree that nobody should go without sanitary protection due to the cost. But where is it proposed the money comes from?
I work in a school and how far the budget has to stretch already is scary. There is no spare Sad

I was thinking about this very thing just now- how about the money from the tampon tax goes to providing free sanitary provision to these girls, as one suggestion?

That would work wouldn't it?

But you can actually buy sanitary towels for pennies. It would cost more to administer a scheme like this than it would cost to buy them.

The highlighted case is terrible if anyone is in that situation, but, knowing the kindness of teachers and schools, I can't help suspecting that no-one needs to be in this situation. I would put money on all schools having a stash of pads for those girls caught short.

It is something that is usually on the 'wanted list' for our local food bank, and something I tend to out in to the collection.

Reading the comments on the petition it's clear that many girls don't even feel they're in a position to ask for help.

For girls on free school meals, some who are in a position of extreme poverty, I'm not even sure they have those few pennies to spare.
As a teacher myself, I've noticed regular absences and it's terribly upsetting that they don't ask us for help.

Free school meals = Free School Tampons. Not a huge expense in the overall budget.

Not a huge expense, agreed, and something that would help so many girls.
Signed and shared with all.
