Academisation and QTS

Just watched the Daily Politics and they said something like academisation means scrapping QTS (qualified teacher status), as far as I could undertsand it. Have I git this right?

This is huge isn't it? Does that mean no more qualification requirement for all teachers etc, no more tests and 3 year course etc?

Since 2012 schools have been able to appoint teachers without QTS. Academies have had an even more relaxed framework.

Under the new white paper academies can appoint whoever they want and pay whatever they want - gets rid of all this inconvenience of a teacher shortage and teachers leaving the profession in droves.

That ladies is what you get for voting Tory.

Not quite no. The DfE have published a strategy document describing what they want to do between now and the end of the parliament. It outlines lots of plans which are being discussed in the media. One of the plans is to make all schools into academies by 2020. That is controversial for lots of reasons - even some people who support academies in principle are balking at the idea of forcing schools to make the change against their will and doing it over such a short time period.

Academies have some freedoms compared to maintained schools. One of the freedoms is to employ unqualified teachers, as private schools are allowed to do. That has always been controversial, although it's not clear how many academies actually use the freedom.

Another of the new plans outlined in the DfE paper is to replace the QTS qualification with a new teaching qualification. That is probably what the TV programme you saw was discussing.

Thanks, that is probably it. They just listed a set of bullet points with no discussion and scrapping QTS was a bullet point.
