Anyone know anything about SHP? Only seems to have an acting head - what's the story?

No story as far as I am aware. Mrs Edwards the previous Head left the role due to ill health and I assume Miss James is acting up for a set period of time before assuming permanence (she is lovely incidentally and a longstanding member of staff - previously deputy head).

My son goes there and it's lovely. Great facilities and lovely forest school. How old is your DC/s?

OK!
I have relatives in the senior school and it is extremely well managed by the current headmaster who also encompasses the managment of the prep school. The senior school did extremely well this year and the prep school appears to be very nurturing. The acting headmistress is lovely and very down to earth.

I don't think you'll go wrong if your DD (?) trying to recall from other thread goes there. The Head at the senior school is great too. Have you been for a visit yet?

Not sure where 'babyfedleaning' is getting their information!!! I know that Mrs Edwards did not leave the Prep school due to ill health and it is very misleading and unkind to say so. I understand that Mrs Edwards sadly chose to leave the school because she felt she could no longer tolerate 'particular issues' within the management. Mrs James has been there for years and is a great teacher, lots of great teachers at the High School!

Apologies AndreaJ that was what I was told and I knew no different. I am a bit mystified about the 'particular issues' you refer to. It's a bit cryptic to say that and no more. Do you really know what went on or are you just passing on hearsay too?

Quite to the contrary of 'babyfedleaning's predictions, and very disappointingly, Miss James was not appointed as the new head of prep. She has worked tirelessly for the school, she is loved by the parents and pupils alike and yet didn't seem to get a look in. Anyone know anything about the experience of the new head of prep? Wolverhampton Grammar is now advertising for a class teacher and on their website she appears to be year 6 coordinator!
Added to this are the worries created by the recent and ongoing loss of many key members of staff, some disappearing with little notice, which is creating great uncertainty. Questions about school leadership were avoided at the parents forum and everyone is left wondering what on earth he is up to, and please don't get me started on the lack of communication, I know a number of parents who are still waiting for replies to concerns months after writing in to the head, is he just hoping they will forget!.......

Getting very mixed messages about Shrewsbury High School. Other schools I visit are cryptically saying to be careful. There are obviously problems which people seem to be keeping very quiet about! I tried to engage a member of staff at a recent visit, as soon as I asked about the management of the school she made her excuses and fled away! As an interested parent I am very curious as to what is going on, I do know that results have taken a heck of a tumble this year. Having recently met the Head I have my suspicions, anyone else know anything?

Has anyone met the new head of the prep school yet? I have heard that a number of parents are worried about her availability to discuss concerns.

I hear that quite a few SHS girls have applied to Shrewsbury School for sixth form. That could be for many reasons of course. A change of scene or because it's coed or courses offered. Many of these girls could be looking for day places though and Shrewsbury encourages full boarding which may be a problem.

Bashstreetmum, I fear that with the current management team in place SHS is going to continue to suffer. For many the penny just hasn't dropped yet!

I agree my friend has applied for her daughter for that reason. I read on a thread that sport is featuring I'm thinking in a bid to counteract Shrewsbury schools move to coed but for me it's a cosmetic move rather than a real move in order to compete for pupils. SHS and Shrewsbury School used to have good relations but it seems the SHS head broke the ties and stopped the good will between the schools. This was before my time in the area and someone may correct me on this. My DCs currently board but considering bringing them back to the area now we've settled and am considering SS rather than SHS though will look at moreton as well.

Bashstreetmum, good luck, both fantastic schools. Moreton's academic results are getting better year on year, Shrewsbury is difficult to beat for the all round curriculum and clubs that it offers. Be sure to negotiate and i'm sure you will secure a good deal.
You are absolutely right about SHS, in a small county like Shropshire even rival schools have to engage with one another. The head has big ideas and does not understand this concept, by burning his bridges he has now marginalised the school. A move towards sport is certainly a ploy, but not a clever one, it merely distances further the very girls he needs to attract.

Inspection report is out today and confirms what those of us with children at the school already know - it is an excellent school with brilliant resources, wonderful staff and happy & motivated children.
