Have you seen this? Scroll to the bottom to get the report on all the individual scores. Might be useful to see how many others got the same score and how many other (potential) appeals you might be up against.

Good luck

Hi. We appealed last year as a last minute thing. We were successful and our ds started in September. You have nothing to lose, definately worth giving it a go. Ds sats scores managed to help us persuade the school he had an off day for the exam.
Good luck.

Ds took the Kent test but is at a Medway grammar school.
Yes he missed Maths by a couple of marks, the others were well over the pass mark. We were going to let him go to the academy but as it got closer to the end of term we realised he was grammar school material and his SATs proved that so we just went for it.

Hi thank you

Dd got 106 maths
111 reasoning
101 English

So 318 total but needed 320 to pass..kent test has changed this year so pass mark is now 320..she missed 2 on aggregate and 5 on english as minimum pass mark on each paper was 106..KCC have said if I appeal I would only need to prove the English..as she lost 5 marks there....so close but so far..i know there will be others who have just missed it by a point or 2 and are over aggreagate..Dd is currently level 4b..hoping she works hard..as she wants the grammar..she needs to really be level 5's by appeal time..how did you find the appeal process? What were the panel like? Thanks

The appeals process was quite daunting actually. We had reports from Ds primary head and examples of work but the panel didn't seem to interested in these. We had written a profile of Ds that we sent before the appeal so the panel had a chance to read through it before hand. In there we just up sold our Ds as much as possible. After that it was just a case of convincing the panel that Ds was worthy of a place.

The panel were very interested in Ds SATs scores and were not even interested if he was not a solid 4a across the board.

The thing that won it for us was Ds's interest in the Raspberry Pi technology and the out of school work he does on it. As the grammar school does a lot of technology and engineering this really interested them.

It is important to emphasise what your Dd will bring to the school as well as why she deserves a place there.

Out of interest, which grammar school are you appealing to?

Oh and the panel do not give anything away! We found them very to the point and sometimes it made you feel uncomfortable. Not a pleasant experience to be honest but you need to stick to your guns and believe you are doing the right thing.

Hello

Keep being told don't appeal as dd not level 5.....she has till may and teacher assesments are a good measure of this.

She has been a school facilitator helping new kids..been a school librarian..plays violin too at dartford boys grammar in a weekly club..school we thought of was dartford girls and wilmington girls..but hard to get into...even for girls who have passed..was also thinking of mayfield grammar...They specialise in languages too and dd wants to learn french..is it worth getting her into a club for this ourselves? ..Further out as we are in dartford......i want to be realistic she is 4bs now..by appeal she needs to be at least 5c? .....keep thinking she has missed 5 on english and 2 on aggreagate...so it seems odds against us..she started preparing in April...as first didn't want to sit it then decided too as friends were....school will support appeal....but I really need them to use words like thrive and grammar ability in their support letter etc....her primary had no faith she would do well..and said they don't advise her sitting it...she worked so hard..maths is her weaker subject and on day just concentrated on that and English slipped slightly.....feel I owe it to her to appeal..she is working at home to improve reading and writing levels too....she has a hearing problem too..worth a mention if we appeal? Thanks...i am rambling but so upset at the moment..and March is so long away..x

We were told a solid level 4a was the minimum you needed to appeal with. Obviously anything over that will look really good.

I am by no means any expert on the process but as you say I believe dartford and wilmington girls are oversubscribed every year. Mayfield you may have a good chance at as they have ben undersubscribed in the past but I don't know how it works now as they had their own test as well?

If you can go further down to Medway schools they often have places and the appeals are more successful in that area but I know they are not the convinient location wise.

Thanks..and also thanks for replying..awful situation to be in..March is so far..being pregnant does not help..too emotional over all this..medway is far out......just gotta think what to do next....should not really listen to people who have not been through appeal as they offer conflicting advice..perhaps without realising....Dd is 4bs now so more she pushes herself the better.....x

Yes just keep encouraging them. We didn't even put any grammar schools down when we completed the form as we accepted maybe it wasn't the best place for Ds. However, he is a May baby and during the last term of school his progress was unbelievable and he matured so much. That is when we decided to apply and see if we could get anything. We thought that if the test had been May and not September he would've passed without any problem. Best decision we made but we wouldn't have applied if we hadn't seen the change in him.

Thank you and well done to ur ds! I believe Grammar is the best option and 5 marks missed is not a massive amount but there maybe girls who missed by 1 or 2..so got to be realistic.......stories like urs do keep me focused and positive..was ur appeal heard in medway then? X

Don't worry about what others are saying.
If you believe that your dd is capable , then she probably is.
Appeals are heard in May/ June .
Did you put the Grammars down on your CAF?

MummaB1 · 03/11/2014 14:57

Hello Yes put as following

Grammar
Academy
Grammar
Grammar

I know grammars will be rejected...and academy becomes one..i thought it was risky only putting one comp down but there are not many good comps here..ones that are good..are also difficult to get into..x

Hi! Did you appeal? I'm in the same boat as you one year after you. My daughter scored 319.

I hope all worked out well for you.
