Hi, please can anyone help, we will be moving to Ayrshire (somewhere) in the near future, my husband has a job in prestwick but where to live ??. I've seen places to avoid, great places etc. we are planning to rent and we need to live no further away then a 40 mins radius from the airport. We are currently in a very rural village in the highlands with two children aged 8 and 2, young one I'm not so concerned about but the older one is in p4 so I need to consider schooling. I want a good school. Not too fussy other then that, well maybe somewhere with a shop!!!!! Thanks in advance

Have you considered the village of Eaglesham (East Renfrewshire) or the bustling suburb which is Newton Mearns (G77) both easily within 30 minutes' drive?

Hopefully others will help you further.

You might want to have a look at Troon. Next to Prestwick but a bit nicer. Lovely beach, kid-friendly cafe with toys called C Gulls, nice children's play area, good for cycling and scooting along the prom. Might be a bit golfy though, unless you are into that. School is Marr College which has traditionally had a good reputation. Good train links into Glasgow. There is also a nice village called Symington very near Prestwick if you want rural.

I also think Largs and West Kilbride are nice although a bit further away. IME these are the nicest of the Ayrshire seaside towns.

Hi Kelmac37, I grew up in Prestwick. This was a lo-o-ong time ago - but thought I'd add a few words anyway. When I was there, the three primary schools were Kingcase, Glenburn and St Ninian's. I think they are still all on the go. St Ninian's was the Catholic school. Kingcase was probably considered more 'upmarket' than Glenburn - I do stress this was some time ago and things might have changed!

Prestwick - great for the sandy beach and wonderful sunsets over Arran. Also, a good place to live if you like golf. If you want more shops to look at, Ayr, the neighbouring biggish town, is probably a better bet.

Alloway on the outskirts of Ayr is very pleasant too - but I think it would be pricey! For the children, in the Alloway area, there is Belleisle Park and Rozelle Estate for a bit of communing with nature.

Maybe somebody with more up-to-date info will happen by ...
