Name a famous explorer... please

Dd (y5) needs to study a famous explorer for her next school project. Would really appreciate some not-so-obvious choices - maybe women? She googled but lots of very American stuff on there. Leif Erikson is top choice right now.

Would really appreciate any input.

Shoveller.
Don't know who he is, but when my brother was a little boy and went to Cub Camp all the tents were named after famous explorers and he was in Shoveller.
On the last day they had to make up a play about the explorer their tent was named after. Unfortunately no-one in his tent had a f*king clue so needless to say they did not win the prize.
