Name a famous explorer... please

Dd (y5) needs to study a famous explorer for her next school project. Would really appreciate some not-so-obvious choices - maybe women? She googled but lots of very American stuff on there. Leif Erikson is top choice right now.

Would really appreciate any input.

I think she was someones daughter (a poet/author)

Gertrude Bell? She might be interesting because of the current political situation in Iraq - sort of makes her story very relevant for today. What do you think?

Shoveller.
Don't know who he is, but when my brother was a little boy and went to Cub Camp all the tents were named after famous explorers and he was in Shoveller.
On the last day they had to make up a play about the explorer their tent was named after. Unfortunately no-one in his tent had a f*king clue so needless to say they did not win the prize. Sad
