Continuing lack of confidence

Dd yr 4 has struggled with confidence around maths

She is doing very well in maths, works in the top group of 6 in the year but is at the bottom of this little group

They did an assessment this week, teacher was very pleased & told her, I was very pleased and told her

She said -but I'm still no good because others are better!

Gah

Would asking her to be out into the next group help?
I'm torn between her thinking she is not good enough to be in the top group and it knocking her confidence more and her sitting higher in the group so it builds her confidence

I think she needs to recognise that she's not in a competition to be the best. If she doesn't realise this then her confidence is always going to suffer from one thing or another. Tell her that she's doing really well in maths so she's sitting with all the other children who are doing really well so that she can get better but also tell her that different children learn things at different speeds and that, rather than trying to be the best all the time, she should, instead, try to do her best.

I encourage my DD to compete with herself if I got 8 right last time can I get 9 right next time. Don't worry about other people.

I do tell her it doesn't matter what everyone else gets but it doesn't sink in -she's been like this for a couple of years
