i picked up my son today from preschool and was asked to sign the accident book. they had been playing hurdles outside on concrete. my son had clipped one of the hurdles with his foot and tripped up onto his face. He has a cut head nose and all above his lip. i didnt say much at the time but when i took him out everyone has commented on how he injured his face and when i said at preschool they couldnt believe it. What should i say when he next goes. i was going to spk to the manager and say if the kids are to jump the hurdles again please ensure my son doesnt join in. i know all kids will trip up but i dont think it was right for the kids to jump hurdles on concrete. Any advice please.

Have they no grass they could do it on?

I wouldn't be impressed either

Hurdles! surely they must be like a low bar for them to jump/walk over... (several inches high)..
even so it does sound nasty.. I'd have a word to see if they could put mats down underneath the bars...

My DS1 (similar age) fairly often trips at preschool and has cuts on face etc. I always get an explanation, and nothing they have done has ever concerned me. Having said that - I would be (a) v concerned about 'hurdles' at 3 yrs old, and (b) v concerned about having them on concrete not mats. IIWY I would speak to the manager, NOT to ask to withdraw your son from hurdling, but ask how they have changed their procedures to ensure safety after such a nasty accident which could have been worse (broken teeth etc). I would expect a good preschool to be thinking "that wasn't a good idea after all - if we use the hurdles again we'll put out mats / do it on grass". Quite a few 3 yr olds can't jump at all. Rather than excluding your son, I would expect them to make the activity safe!

thanks 4 all your comments r helpfull. my son said this morning that his front teeth are wobbly! ive checked them and i think they are ok but ill take him for a checkup if he says it again just to be on the safe side. i will find out full facts from preschool when i take him next. ie was it def on concrete. im sure it was as they havent got any grass in their playground.

ive spoken to the manager at preschool today-she wasnt there when it happened but said that yes it was on concrete. i said that i was going to keep him off preschool until the scabs have healed up. she said that he had caught the hurdle with his foot and fell straight onto his face. i said that i understand that kids can trip over anything but i would prefer it if when they played hurdles next that my son didnt do it. she said that was my choice i dont think she was that happy about it but as im 36 wks pregnant i dont really want to worry about my son getting a smashed up face again so quickly.
