How to make school coats/bags identifiable?

DS is due to begin preschool the week after next. All the kids have to have identical school coats, school book bags, school gym bags.

I have just started going through naming them (have iron in name tags and permanent marker), but am thinking that DS is going to struggle to recognise his and probably be at risk of taking the wrong one (he is just 3 and I don't put a lot of trust in his reading yet).

How do people make their kid's things more identifiable (when dealing with a class/full of kids with identical coats, book bags and gym bags)? Do you buy/make colourful things to tie onto them, so that your child can fairly instantly recognise their's?

DS has a keyring with his name on it, its made of square beads with letters of the alphabet on.

My DDs have loads of key rings hanging from their school bags.

Keyrings hanging off the book bag handle are popular with DS's Reception class. Too many lego minifigure ones though.

I got bag tags from the same website we got name labels (stuckonyou - not sure if it's .com or .something else) My girls have used them on their school bags since they started. Big tag in a variety of shapes/colours/ designs with their name printed on one side.

I sewed a coloured piece of ribbon / tape to the top of the bookbag handle. In DS's first school, all the bookbags were placed in a large crate / box, standing up with handles uppermost, and were collected by the children from this for e.g. individual reading or at the end of the day. An immediate guide to identification from the angle he would usually see the bag was vital.

If bags are hung on pegs, then identification on the front or back 'face' of the bag is useful. if in boxes, on the handle or top. Or just go for all-round identification marks!

Hi QTpie - what about a Namee -
They are really bright, recognizable Bag Tags for your DS preschool bag. Really recommend these.

Bag & PE Bag have keyrings on them - all the kids seem to love having multiple things their bags.

Jackets, I tie a coloured shoelace (but could use ribbon) to the hanging loop on inside - jackets are all so similar, needs to be obvious at a glance so they don't take others, or can see who has theirs on!

Shoes, I write on inside base with name and an arrow pointing to other shoe, so he puts them on the right feet! Arrows point to each other when correct, LOL.
