nah we should just scrap nurseries and make school start at 3 months old - then force all women to get their arses off the sofa and get to work Wink

I have to say I haven't spent any of my money on DIY stuff - tend to treat myself to new clothes.......

I think there is a proposal to extend schooling so that the current 13 weeks holiday is reduced by 50% too..possibly to protect the rights of working mothers

Well I am a working mother and I would be furious if my DC's holidays were reduced!

But what about taking holidays during term time that would start at three then what a nightmare ...

and who would pay for it? I think the education budget is stretched as it is

The number of school holidays children have will not get changed. It would never get through the teaching unions.

Formal education at 3yo is not good. Let's face it 4yo is very young, especially for some children.

Report
SoupDragon · 10/03/2006 09:51

Why on earth would you want to lower it to 3?? They're babies!

Report
SoupDragon · 10/03/2006 09:52

Send them out to work at 7. That would make it possible for more mums to go out to work.

Report
LIZS · 10/03/2006 09:52

Do you mean make it complusory to send your preschooler somewhere rather than optional ?Most start younger than 5 anyway and the school hours and terms are limiting job wise. All you'd really be doing is calling nurseries/preschools "school" and not much would change. Think it is fairly common in parts of Spain and Italy but not sure it makes any difference to women working.

WHY MUMS MUMS MUMS all the time????? I happen to work full time and Dp takes care of dd. In which case it's him that'd go out to work.

But that set aside no I dont think its a good idea for 3 yr olds to be in full time education in schools. They need time to grow and learn thro play.

I'd rather they raised it 6 tbh

Me too..I think we send children into school too young.

I stay at home because i chose to look after my girls (and that is not meant in a smug way before i get jumped on, it's meant in a i am lucky i had that choice way).
I would not appreciate having someone tell me my 3 year old MUST go into full time Education so that i can go back to work.
At 3 she is still my little baby, i want her with me not shoved into a system i wouldn't be happy with. I think it's a terrible idea.
Absolutely awful!Sad

I don't know whether the original poster intended it but the implication was that it would have little to do with any educational benefit just a material advantage for mum ie free childcare in a school

Report
Hulababy · 10/03/2006 10:44

I would love to see the whole idea that school is a form of childcare done away with. Because it really isn't.

I think the government is extending that idea Hula, with breakfast and dinner clubs

I know and I find it a bit :( I'd like to see education and child care as seperate issues. Sadly at the last school i taught out the parents did see school as primarly a place to send their children, out of the way for a day, rather than somewhere their children came to to learn new skills and abilities to enable them to progress in their furture lives.

I'm having enough difficulty accepting that dd1 will start school at 4y 9m!
