Have a look at your local FE college. Some of them run 'Help your child with Maths/English' courses for parents who feel they could do with a refresher/don't reember ever learning it/it this way.

To change a fraction to it's simplest form you:

  1. Work out what the factors (numbers that multiply together) are of both the top and the bottom part. So for the top, 38, the factors are 2 and 19 (2x19=38) and for the bottom 100, the factors are 2 and 50, (2x50=100) 4 and 25 (4x25=100), 5 and 20 (5x20=100) etc.

  2. Look for the higherst factor on both sides that is the same. In this example it is 2 because 2 is a factor of 38 and also a factor of 100.

  3. Divide both the top and bottom of the fraction by the highest common factor. 38 divided by 2 is 19 (that goes on top of the fraction) and 100 divided by 2 is 50 (this goes on the bottom)

    Hey presto: 19/50
