The Mount, Mill Hill or other schools?

I am going to look at The Mount in Mill Hill tomorrow with a view to moving DD at the end of Yr2 from her state primary and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on it.

I know the area well but I don't know much about The Mount but have pretty much decided to look at it by process of elimination. DD is quite shy and sensitive and I'm looking for somewhere quite nurturing for her. I think that she's quite bright but she's also very arty and slightly quirky. She's definately not an NLCS / Habs kind of girl and I don't think that she'd thrive in a pushy environment such as Holland House and Goodwyns either. Unfortunately I've had to discount Grimsdell as Belmont's fees are just too expensive but I do think that it might be a good school for her.

The best way to check out any school is for your child to have a taster day there and see what she thinks of it. You will also get a 'feel' for the kind of children who go there. Try to observe the older children at the school. If you feel your child will be a good fit with those children, when she reaches that age, then chances are it's right for her, and for you.

Used to have a reputation for rich but dim kids - but that was 30 odd years ago!

My post is nearly 2 years old and she now goes to a different prep school. I saw The Mount and it was rather sad, a very sweet school, struggling to fill places, slightly run down and mostly foreign children with little english. It has clearly suffered from Mill Hill going co-ed.

Whoops! Just realised you are talking about The Mount 'dahn sahth' rather than The Mount School oop 'ere in York. So sorry to hear you were disappointed with what you saw at the Mill Hill school. Our version here in York is outstanding in all respects. My apologies for not reading your original post properly!

If you live anywhere near Southgate, my niece goes to Salcombe and it has a good art department with a new workshop that she loves. She keeps bringing back her portfolio when she visits! It's known for being small and friendly and she's starting ballet this term there. She's in Year 4 at the moment and I don't think she's being pushed for any particular school as her friends are looking at a whole range of places at 11+

I joined this site just to say, I'm in the last year of the mount and I couldn't love it more. The students are lovely, and you feel so close to the teachers, I'm not looking forward to leaving at all! I'm predicted 6 A*s and 4 As, and since the new head teacher came the majority of financial difficulties have been more or less solved - so if you wanted to know the school from a pupil's point of view, here it is. :) but I must say, the older you get, the better it gets at The Mount, so you could look into it in the future!

Thanks to TheTina for the positive feedback. The Mount School is well loved by parents and students alike and the girls, who are delightful, achieve a great deal, both academically and in many other areas. They also really enjoy their school life leaving happy and confident.
There is an ESOL department to help girls for whom English is not their first language. With so much additional support these bright girls integrate quickly into school life.
If you want to find out for yourself what the school is really like why not visit!

Hello, I am mother of a boy at mill hill since a year. He is doing his gcse. I must say he is happy at the school. Many of his school mates are telling him not to stay for his 6form as lever of teaching is poor and in mill hill you arriver as last chance. He is getting worried and me too. I have read several different point of views but don't know anymore what to think and believe. Has anyone children in the 6 form that can give me his opinion.? Any help is appreciated.

Hi user,
I wonder if you should post on the Student Room to get more opinions? I know there has been a change of head recently but haven't heard how that went.

The parents of Mill Hill students never seem to post here, no idea why. I don't have a child there but have tried to get feedback several times before.
