Item not as described -return postage

Hi there,

I bought some expensive boots as a complete bargain on eBay for my son who's a weird size for the sport.

They were described in the listing as a size 9.

However when they arrived they were a 42- a size 8. I think it was a genuine error (it's a female dominated sport so smaller sizes are more popular) We're really disappointed as the item was otherwise perfect but he can't get his foot in.

Anyway messaged seller and she says mistake, she just googled 42 and it said size 9- an American 9 and she didn't notice.

I feel bad as i think it was a mistake and from messages before the sale she seemed nice but in too small a size they are no use to us.


She agreed to refund and did so last night. Item and postage.

I went to post office this morning to return them as as the parcel is 2.6kg it will be £13 something second class and £15 something first.

I feel bad as she seems nice but I don't want to be £13+ out of pocket for someone else's mistake.

Where do I stand with this?

Have you messaged her about the return postage? If she seems nice and reasonable, she will probably just refund you via PayPal? You could have got her to post you a prepaid label (via eBay) for the return but too late now if you've already paid it.

she should give you a label which you print off. If you open a not as described case she can do it there. Have you sent them already?

Send them back via Hermes or similar if you haven't already done so, it'll be a lot less.

You need to go through eBay's returns process. It doesn't matter that you've already contacted the seller - in fact eBay advise it.

They will then send you a pre-paid label to use.

The advantage of this is that the return postage is free. You are also covered if (as happened to me) the returned item goes missing.

you shouldn't have to pay at all - they were not as described. Seller will have to bear the cost. It is not up to you to shop around for a cheap way to return them.

Ask her to send you a pre paid returns label, or send you a PP payment to cover the postage.

I see you said she's already refunded you, but the item was misdescribed, so if she wants the item back then she must pay the return postage.
