Query on refund

Sorry, this will have been asked many times before I'm sure. I bought and paid for an item in early December which was due to arrive a week later. It didn't and several days after the supposed delivery date the eBay retailer emailed to say he'd been ill but would process my order and I'd get it in time for Christmas unless I wanted to cancel. Nothing has arrived and the seller hasn't responded to two messages from me a week apart so I've raised a dispute (I think that's what I've done) requesting a refund. I have to give seller until 9 Jan to respond and if nothing have to contact eBay. I paid via PayPal.

What happens from 9 Jan assuming I don't hear anything? The seller previously had excellent feedback but now has lots of negative comments from the last month from people who have paid for things, but not received them and no communication.

Thank you - do I need to contact PayPal at all or will that be done by eBay?

I bet seller died or similar. Anyway, just raise a case & get your money back. Raising a case plus all that other f/back means they'll lose their selling privileges, you don't need to bother with f/back.

Xpost. Did you raise the dispute via Ebay resolution centre or with Paypal? Wherever you opened the case is where you close it, anyway.

It was via the eBay resolution centre. In over 10 years of eBay purchasing I've never had a problem. The seller no longer has anything listed for sale, but had hundreds of items previously. Assuming he was honest about his illness, then it is quite possible he has either been hospitalised again, this time for longer, or passed away.
