Buyer hasn't received item!

I sent an item on Friday 5th July, the buyer sent me an eBay message yesterday Sunday 14th saying they hadn't received the item yet. For my first time I had paid online for postage, I paid for second class recorded but stuck the label on and then just put it in the post box, now I am worried that maybe I have done something wrong? Should I have dropped it off at the post office? Now because I used the online thing I have no proof of postage only an email confirmation that I bought the postage label, also I have no tracking number or anything like that to try track the parcel.
I have asked the buyer to wait until the end of the week and if they have still not received the item to send me a message with their PayPal details and I will refund their money.

Have I done the right thing? Is there anything else I could or should do? This has never happened to me before and from now on I will be going to the post office like before!

yes you still needed to take it to the post office for the recorded delivery to be logged

all you can do is file a lost item with royal mail on the 26th July once it is considered lost but without proof of postage I doubt they will pay out. You don't need their paypal details, you just log into paypal, click on their payment, scroll down and hit refund.

Ok, thanks, I don't mind refunding them with my own money, I know post office won't do anything without proof of postage, I just feel so bad as its never happened to me before and don't want the buyer to think I have tried to scam them. The buyer has not replied to that message but I presume they will just wait till the end of the week and then let me know if it has arrived or not.
